Parent/Child Relationships
The Parent/Child functionality gives you the ability to make the form dynamically change based on the candidate/user’s answers, by allowing multiple Child questions to be connected a single Parent question. The child question(s) will appear based on how the parent question is answered.
The parent question can only be a Multiple Choice Question. Whilst the questions are built in the Global Question Pool, the parent/child relationship needs to be established once the questions have been imported into a form.
An example would be asking if the candidate was a current employee, and if they answered yes, they would be required to enter their employee number.
To set this up:
- Go to the Form Template List and click edit on the form you wish to add the parent and child questions to.
- Import the probable parent and child questions to the form by clicking the Add global question link.
- Select the questions you wish to Add.
- Click Add at the bottom of the page.
- Once the questions have been added to the form, edit the question that will be the parent question by clicking the Edit link.
- On the Manage Question page, click the Answer Options tab.
- Click the Edit link on the answer option that will trigger the appearance of the child questions.
- Select the child question(s) from the Available Questions field that you wish to use and click the Add > button.
- Once the questions have been added, they will appear in the Dynamic Child Question field.
- Now the parent/child relationship has been established for this answer option, click the Save button.
- Repeat this process if you wish to link other child questions to the answer options in the parent question.
Once you return to the form, the questions that have been dynamically linked will appear like so:
The arrow icons indicate which questions are the parent questions, and which are child questions.
